De laatste workshop die ik bijwoonde is die van Eric Slaats. Hij is de initiator en projectleider van iFontys en dus heb ik die voor het laatst bewaard. Hij doet in zijn verhaal de volgende verspellingen op het gebied van mobiel:

• it gets wearable
• it gets ruggedized
• it gets flexible
• new displays (holographics)
• new interactions
• super sensors

Volgens Eric gaat mobiel de volgende impact hebben op het onderwijs:

• Supersensor to monitor student progress
• Mobile dashboard for educational monitoring
• interactive local social media
• real-time correlation and interaction in courses

Het was duidelijk dat het vierde presentatie was en er daardoor te weinig tijd was om hier dieper op in te gaan. Volgende keer maar afspreken met Eric. ;-)

Vandaag kwam ik een artikel tegen over het grote nadeel van ontwikkelen voor Android. Het artikel gaat over de case van game die van iOS nu ook beschikbaar is voor Android.

99.9% of support emails are complaining their device isn't supported. We currently support 707 devices. Mindblowing.

Dus er zijn meer dan 1400 verschillende devices die natuurlijk allemaal verschillende resoluties hebben, verschillende processoren, verschillende hoeveelheid geheugen. Voor iOS zijn er minder dan 20. Daar komt nog bij dat iOS-gebruikers over het algemeen snel updaten naar de laatste versie. Na twee weken had al 61% zijn device geupdate naar 5.1.

Er zijn zelfs al developers die hierom stoppen met het ontwikkelen voor Android.

Ik ben heel benieuwd hoe dit straks gaat met Windows Mobile. Volgens mij komen daar ook veel verschillende devices voor.

Vorige maand hebben wij een kleine update van onze iTU Delft-app ingediend. Deze update werd echter afgekeurd door Apple. De reden die werd opgevoerd:

The reason given:

We found that your app is too similar to iPS HOME screen, which is not in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines.

Dit natuurlijk vreemd omdat we dezelfde app de week ervoor nog ingediend hebben. Blackboard, die de app voor ons gemaakt heeft, gaf dit als toelichting:

Apple has begun indiscriminately rejecting apps, ostensibly for having “rounded icons” – specifically citing from their guidelines, “Apps which appear confusingly similar to an existing Apple product or advertising theme will be rejected."

It appears that we and other developers are getting caught in the crossfire between Apple and Samsung, who are fighting over an array of intellectual property rights (notably the design aspects of their platforms). This is unfortunate as our default icons have been a paradigm that we’ve utilized in over 100 app submissions. In fact, when we were first developing iStanford, some of the folks at Apple helped advise us on this particular aspect.

Given this predicament, please know that we are keeping on top of this and have already created alternate icons as an immediate solution and are concurrently in talks with Apple. The longer term solution may include revamping our entire platform design, but for the interim these new module icons are acceptable according to Apple's guidelines.

We hebben nu dus de ikonen aangepast en nu is de app weer beschikbaar. Voor consistentie, is de Androi-versie ook geüpdatet. Hieronder de oude en de nieuwe ikonen:

De TU Delft app is nu beschikbaar voor zowel iPhone als Android. Verder is Blackboard Mobile Learn in de Android-versie ook geïntegreerd. Voor iPhone staat deze klaar, maar Apple doet moeilijk met het goedkeuren van de app.

Dit betekent dat wij nu wel onze eigen TU-iconen kunnen gaan maken. Dit waren wij al van plan, maar functionaliteiten hadden prioriteit. Mijn IO-studentassistent is nu druk bezig met de ikonen.

Each year, Educause and New Media Consortium publish the Horizon Report. This report describes six areas of emerging technology that will have significant impact on higher education and creative expression over the next one to five years. The areas of emerging technology cited for 2012 are:

Als je meerekent hoe lang een post online staatn, dan is het bericht over de resultaten van de TU Delft Mobile Survey 2011 het meest gelezen.

Vandaag kwam ik een interessant artikel tegen van de Abilene Christian University. Deze universiteit is een voorloper op het gebied van mobiele devices binnen de universiteit. Het artikel is van maart van dit jaar.

In dit paper "iPad or iFad - The reality of a paperless classroom" gaan de auteurs, 2 docenten, in op de pilot die ze hebben gedaan met een compleet papierloos klaslokaal met gebruik van iPad.

De conclusie is duidelijk:

What we are experiencing now is definitely not an iFad! The paperless classroom is a reality for both the instructor and student. I see the iPad and its educational applications as critical in the development of mobile learning. I will be doing this again!

Het artikel is de moeite waard om te lezen, ze gaan namelijk ook in op allerlei praktische problemen die ze tegen kwamen.

De universiteit heeft op hun mobile learning website trouwens nog veel meer interessante artikelen en rapporten staan over mobile learning.

Vorige week is versie 2 van de iTU Delft app beschikbaar gekomen in de app store. Deze versie bevat een heel aantal nieuwe functionaliteiten en verbeteringen aan de bestaande. Deze versie is nu beschikbaar voor iOS, de versie voor Android volgt snel. Ook de mobiele website m.tudelft.nl moet nog geupdate worden.

In March of this year we conducted a survey among the TU Delft students about their mobile phone and usage of it. Due to busy times with Blackboard and OpenCourseWare I still had to finish the processing of the results. Today I finally did ;-)

The most important results are:

• More than 80% of our students use a smart phone. That’s 20% increase in a little more than 1 year.
• HTC is the most popular phone brand, closely followed by Apple
• Android is the most used platform for smart phones, followed by Apple iOS. There is a significant increase of Android and decrease of Windows since 2009
• 22% of the respondents have another mobile device, most popular is the tablet
• More than 60% of respondents access Blackboard on their phone, but you see big difference between the platforms
• iOS-users use more features of their phone, especially listening to music, watching video and social networking
• T-Mobile is the most used provider
• 47% of the respondents have Eduroam (wifi-network on campus) configured on their phone.
• 46% of the iPhone users have installed the iTU Delft app
